Question Iphone Version 1.0.2 help to upgrade

Hi Guys,
I bought an iPhone (sim-free) last year from a shop in Doha, Qatar (Middle East).

I have been told that if I try to upgrade the software Apple will block the phone because it wasn't bought via contract.

How can I upgrade my phone so I can take advantage of all the new software out there?

I would be most grateful for any help...in layman's terms!

Thanks in advance

Daffy.
