AT&T "Out of Network" Workaround(s)??

Hello from scenic Colorado!

I have had my 16GB iPhone since February 2008. I do a lot of contract work on-the-road, especially in the boonies where there is no AT&T coverage. When I bought my iPhone with the nationwide calling plan, I assumed that "nationwide" meant exactly that--WRONG!

If you examine the AT&T service contract, you'll learn that you are strictly limited as to how much of your minutes is allowed to be in an area where AT&T does not provide service. In fact, I was told that if I did not drastically reduce my amount of calls for "out of network" calls that my service contract would be cancelled. I tried to reason with the folks who called. I asked to speak to the Supervisor of the Customer Service Representative who called me. I got exactly the same message.

Bottom Line: I did drastically reduce my minutes while I am out of network; I still have my iPhone but I have to be very mindful of where I am when I travel out of state.

My question to all of those a bit more advanced, technically than I am: Is there any kind of work around for my situation? My current "solution" is to buy a cheap pre-paid phone and throw it away when I am done in a given geographical area.

Happily, I still have the use of the contact database, calendar, alarms, etc. However, I can't help thinking that there must be a simpler solution for me to make and receive phone calls in a mobile mode, while I am on the road.

Hello, blue frog! Thank you for joining the forums!

Since your thread has a question in it, I'm moving it to the "Wireless Carriers" section.
