Firmware Updates Cause Headaches For Me

I have a 1st Gen 2.5G iPhone (16GB) and I Synch it to my Windows XP laptop. The laptop is a Toshiba; it has been a decent work laptop for me for the past 3 1/2 years. However, something about my laptop, Windows XP, and iPhone firmware updates consistently bricks my iPhone every time--especially since 2.0.

Once Apple gets around to releasing their new laptops (rumored to be mid-Oct), I'll be replacing my Toshiba and buying a new Apple laptop. It is my fervent hope that synching my iPhone will erase--or at least greatly reduce the challenges that I have endured with each of the firmware updates that Apple releases.

Has anyone else who synchs with Windows XP had these kinds of problems as well? Also, are there any folks who have had these problems and subsequently migrated over to an Apple laptop? I would be very interested in your feedback about that!

Having just weathered the upgrade to 2.1 ( I waited a week before making the attempt) I am really not looking forward to the 2.2 update which appears to be getting ready for release.

I Doubt the ISP is the Problem

I have Comcast at home. However, since I am on the road a lot, I do not hook my laptop up to my house hardwired internet. I usually use the Free wi-fi that is available either on the road or in my local library.

Prior to the recent economic meltdown, I was about to buy an Apple laptop. As you may guess, that planned purchase has been postponed. I am really hoping that once I do have an Apple laptop, my firmware update challenges will evaporate.
