restoring!

I have iphone 3g with 2.2 firmware. I want to do full restore. just like out of box. i dont want to reinstall any backups. and another question is will it format hard drive. reason i want to do this is that i was exploring my iphone with iphone brower and what i saw is there are 3 differnt applicaton folders "Application.xxxxxx" 3 of them. 3 folders for wallpaper etc.

well if anyone knows plz let me know how to.

also how this spring board short cut works. are they same as windows mobile. i dont know how mac os works.
