Apple: unlocking programs cause irreparable damage to the iPhone

Very bad news for many iPhone owners:

Source: Apple today released the following statement:: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance

Quote:
Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.
So, this means that any next iPhone software update may "broke" your iPhone.

When I took my bricked (non-jailbroken) iPhone in to get back up to speed, I noted a large sign behind the Genius Bar that basically said what you summarized, Alex--but they used a lot more verbage.
