So I take it that it was owned by someone else?

I wonder if they paid a nice sum of money to aquire it?

I know some companies have went to court to aquire domain names because of trademarks or whatever. I don't think Apple could do that with the iphone though because the iphone.com name was probably registered many years ago and the iphone was created after that.

You know this is nothing new. This type of practice has been going on since the beginning of the www and companies such as Disney and so on have paid nice sums of money as well. There is really not a whole lot that can be done about it other than the companies pay the people and get it over with.

That's expected, though I am wondering how much Apple paid for that domain.

Now, any guesses on how long it will be before microsoft buys ie7.com?

Here is some more info I found: IPhone.com has been acquired by Apple

Some companies haven't had to pay when the domains were using their trademarks. Some have settled out of court for a lot less than the domains were worth and others ahve gone to court to aquire the domain outright.

Apple has reportedly purchased the domain iPhone.com from Michael Kovatch for more than $1 million according to DomainTools report.

Apple Purchases iPhone.com Domain - Everything iPhone

One million dollars is a bargain price when it comes to domain names and what Apple is going to make of the iphone.
