Exclamation imap email question

So as far as I understand, this imap email account will only download email when I have mail open?
Because I don't have a large data allowance on my phone, I would like to only download emails in wireless spots, such as at home or at university.
By not opening the mail application, nothing will be downloaded? Only when I click on it?

Thanks!
