iPhone will support AJAX, third party software

Quote:
At Apple's World-Wide Developer's Conference today, Steve Jobs announced that, yes, third-party developers will be able to create programs that work on the iPhone. Kind of. Under the security blanket of the Safari browser, which will officially support the "Web 2.0" Java-based techniques in AJAX, developers will be able to create applications for the iPhone. Though these applications will presumably run under the Safari app, they will be able to access and take advantage of some of the iPhone's built-in features, like Google Maps and the address book.

Shares of Apple stock fell 3.5 percent after Jobs announced the decision not to give developers a kit that would allow them to write specialized programs for the iPhone.

Wow, it seems like they are trying to make the iphone replace computers! Glad to see that some many companies are developing add-ons for the iphone, will make it even better for the consumers.

I think that the 3.9 percent drop in stock was warranted. It would be much better if third-party developers could develop for the iPhone.

By making people go through Safari, the iPhone users can only use their third-party applications while connected. I know my phones lose service in many areas, such as tunnels and airplanes.
